Materials
-Overhead projector
-Acetate graph paper and overhead marker
-Graph paper (one per student)
-Colored or regular pencils
-Multiplication fact chart (through 10s for 4th grade and through 12s for 5th grade)
Preparations
Have projector, acetate graph paper, and pen ready.
A sheet of graph paper is needed for each student.
Procedures
1. Using a multiplication chart, the teacher will review the math facts of perfect squares. Using the overhead, or the board, the teacher will demonstrate how one x one, two x two, three x three and etc., look on graph paper eliciting the answer from the students that they are "perfect" squares.
2. Students will make 10 (4th grade) or 12 (5th grade) perfect squares on their graph paper. They will label each square with the correct multiplication fact.
3. The extension activity can be given following the lesson if there is enough time - it can take a long time.
Assessments
Students need to know all of the squares and have drawn them on the graph paper.
Extensions
1. Students will be given the attached word problem. The teacher may have them work alone or in small groups to figure out the answer. Once a child, or a group, sees the pattern they can figure it out.
Since the lesson is on perfect squares, you may wish to wait until another time to do this activity as to not have the students know what the answer will be before they do the activity.
Answer: The only lockers that will be open are those of perfect squares.
