Description
Prepare for a fun way to teach your students to reflect on their behavior by "Looking at the Man in the Mirror."

Materials
-Audio tape of Micahel Jackson's song, "The Man in the Mirror"
-Audio Player
-Poster with Character Education words listed. Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship (see websites)
-One dozen hand mirrors
-Quest For Character Videos, available at each school
-VCR/TV
-Writing Journals for each student
-Blank Venn diagrams for each child
Preparations
Lesson 1
1. Acquire copy of "Man in the Mirror" for the class to listen to and understand its meaning.
2. Have audio cassette player ready for presentation of song.
3. Create poster of character education words.
Lesson 2
1. Have a video ready from Quest for Character - VCR/TV
2. Keep these items to review for Lesson 3.
3. Have hand mirrors ready.
4. Have student journals ready.
Lesson 3
1. Acquire video from Quest for Character and a VCR/TV.
2. Have copies of Venn diagram made for each student.
Procedures
Lesson 1
1. As students enter the room have "Man in the Mirror" playing to spark the students' interest.
2. As the song ends, discuss how music that we listen to affects our behavior.
3. Play the song again. Have the students think how they might have handled situations differently if they had begun with themselves instead of blaming others first.
4. Using the Character Education words poster, discuss how these traits could improve a conflict situation.
5. End the lesson by playing the tape one more time and allowing the students to move to the beat of the music. This song can become the class theme song.
Lesson 2
1. Review Character Education words from previous lesson.
2. Pass out hand mirrors to pairs of students. Have partners describe themselves to each other as a review from previous lesson with "Man in the Mirror."
3. Take up mirrors and save them to be used in conflicting situations in your class.
4. Inform the students that they will be viewing a video containing several situations where conflicts occur but are solved by modeling conflict resolution tactics.
5. Inform the students that they will be responding in their writing journals at the end of the video. They will each describe a personal situation and how they could have handled it differently using conflict resolution tactics. They must use a variety of the Character Ed words that have been discussed.
6. View video and allow time for students to respond in their writing journals.
7. In closing, review the strategies used in the video to solve conflicts. Allow students to share how they feel about using these strategies in everyday situations.
Lesson 3
1. Review previous lessons' video strategies.
2. Tell students the video that they will watch today is another example of how to properly solve conflicts.
3. Distribute the Venn diagrams. Explain how they are used to compare and contrast.
4. Inform students that they need to chose two situations to compare and contrast by using the Venn diagram. Compare proper and improper behavior used in the video to handle each situation.
5. Show video.
6. Upon completion of the video, give a quick review of the directions to complete Venn diagram and allow 15-20 minutes to complete.
7. Close lesson by allowing the students to share their findings by using the Venn diagram to compare and contrast.
Assessments
NOTE: This lesson only addresses the medium of songs.
Assessment: 1
Upon completion of lessons 1 and 2 students respond in their journals by using reflections from a personal experience. Students reflect how their situation could have been handled differently after viewing the video. Students must use vocabulary from the lesson in their writings. The description of their experiences and how they would handle them differently must show the proper self-correction needed to properly handle personal situations. If the writing contains the proper usage of Character Education vocabulary, assume that knowledge has been acquired in this area of Character Education and its place in today's society.
Assessment: 2
Students appropriately complete the Venn diagram as a response to viewing the video and proof of their understanding of appropriate and inappropriate handling of conflict situations. Proper comparison and contrast of the situations must be shown.
