Description
The student creates a mobile with a minimum of four space figures. The mobile is made after the students understand the geometric/space figure vocabulary and have practiced drawing these figures using software programs. (NETS for Students: 3.1 and 3.2)

The student given a verbal description, draws and/or models two- and three-dimensional shapes and uses appropriate geometric vocabulary to write a description of a figure or a picture composed of geometric figures.

-Space Figure Patterns (See Attached Files.)
-Drawing software Microsoft Publisher, Clarisworks or another similar software
-Coat hangers
-Construction paper various colors
-Markers
-Glue
-Scissors
-String
-Computers
Preparations
1. Plan direct instruction text or appropriate teaching tools.
2. Gather all supplies.
3. Make copies of patterns.
4. Set up computers.
5. Become familiar with software.
Procedures
1. Use direct instruction to introduce space figures and geometric shapes.
2. Have students demonstrate a knowledge of this instruction by going on a Space Figure Scavenger Hunt. Students report to assigned area (i.e. playground, courtyard, etc.). Students identify REAL objects that are or incorporate space figures and geometric shapes. In addition, students list objects that they use or have that resemble these figures (basketballs, garbage cans, etc.).
3.Students use a "Draw" program to practice making space figures. (Microsoft Publisher, Clarisworks, etc.}
4.When students demonstrate adequate understanding of the geometric concepts, instruct them to begin their mobiles:
a) Use the patterns to create space figures;
Note: Students must follow instructions on the patterns in order to fold and create shapes correctly!
b) Label each geometric shape with a marker.
c) Use tape and string to assemble mobile pieces on a wire hanger.
Assessments
Assess students on completion of mobile, labeling of mobile correctly, and use of identified shapes.
Note: Circulate and formatively assess students as they use the technology tools. Provide assistance for students who are experiencing difficulty and monitor accordingly.
