Maximum Profit
Johnny Wolfe Santa Rosa District Schools
Description
This lesson uses application that provides reinforcement in such areas as problem solving, multiplying polynomials, and finding maximum points.
Standards
Florida Sunshine State Standards MA.A.1.4.1 Associates verbal names, written word names, and standard numerals with integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, real numbers and complex numbers.
MA.A.3.4.1 Understands and explains the effects of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on real numbers, including square roots, exponents, and appropriate inverse relationships.
Florida Process Standards Numeric Problem Solvers 03 Florida students use numeric operations and concepts to describe, analyze, communicate, synthesize numeric data, and to identify and solve problems.
Materials
-Overhead transparencies (if examples are to be worked on overhead) for Maximum Profit Worksheet (See Attached Files.)
-Marking pens (for overhead).
-Maximum Profit Examples (See Attached Files.)
-Maximum Profit Worksheet (See Attached Files.)
-Maximum Profit Checklist (See Attached Files.)
Preparations
1. Prepare transparencies (if teacher uses overhead for examples) for Maximum Profit Examples. (See Attached Files.)
2. Secure marking pens (for overhead).
3. Have Maximum Profit Examples (See Attached Files.) prepared and ready to demonstrate to students.
4. Have enough copies of Maximum Profit Worksheetfor each student. (See Attached Files.)
5. Have enough copies of Maximum Profit Checklist for each student. (See Attached Files.)
Procedures
Prior Knowledge: Students should be familiar with basic operation skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, fractions, decimals, quadratic equations, axis of symmetry, writing equations, and graphing quadratics. NOTE: This lesson does not address irrational and complex numbers for SSS MA.A.1.4.1. This lesson does not address square roots and inverse relationships for SSS MA.A.3.4.1 . This lesson also does not address square roots for SSS MA.A.3.4.3..
1. Discuss with students how maximum profit is used in business (See # 1 on attached file Maximum Profit Examples). Answer student questions and comments.
2. Work Example (See # 2 on Attached file Maximum Profit Examples). Answer student questions and comments.
3. Distribute the Maximum Profit Worksheet. (See Attached Files.)
4. Distribute the Maximum Profit Checklist. (See Attached Files.) Describe what constitutes an A, B, C, D, and an F in the Checklist.
5. The student will write their responses on the worksheet.
6. The teacher will move from student to student observing the students work and lending assistance.
Assessments
Collect the students' worksheets and score using the Maximum Profit Checklist. (See Attached Files.)
Extensions
Have students survey spectators at a school function (such as a football game). Determine how many would still attend the game if the ticket prices were increased by $0.50, $1.00, $1.50, and $2.00. Then have students determine the price for maximum profit.
