Description

Students will perform at 5 fitness stations a day for a week. Each fitness station will be based on a benefit of vigorous physical activity.

Materials

-Posters
-Jump ropes
-Cones
-Stopwatch
-Masking tape
-5 chalkboard erasers
-Jump boxes
-Whistle

Preparations

1. Gather materials:
5 chalkboard erasers
5 jump ropes
5 cones
5 posters
1 roll of masking tape
stopwatches

2. Draw diagrams of stations on each poster. Apply each poster to each station.

3. Set up stations:
Agility - Shuttle run
Power - push-ups
Balance - jump rope on one foot
Speed - 25 yard dash
Reaction Time - jump boxes

Procedures

1. Introduction:
Have the students separated into 5 groups. Each group will have 2 minutes to come up with at least one health benefit that results from vigorous physical activity. Health benefits include: healthy heart, healthy respiratory system, improved cardiovascular fitness, stronger muscles, stronger bones, improved circulatory system, and etc. After discussing benefits, each group will go to 1 of the 5 stations.

2. Content:
Each group will participate at each station twice. Each station will last for 2 minutes. They will have 30 seconds for transition from station to station.

Station # 1 is the power station.
While at the power station, each student will perform as many pushups as they can in 2 minutes.

Station # 2 is the speed station.
While at the speed station, each student will run the 25 yard dash as many times as they can in 2 minutes.

Station # 3 is the balance station.
While at the balance station, each student will jump rope on one foot as many times as they can for 2 minutes.

Station # 4 is the agility station.
While at the agility station, each student will run the shuttle run as many times as they can for 2 minutes.

Station # 5 is the reaction time station.
While at the reaction time station, each student will do jump boxes as many times as they can in 2 minutes.

After completing all 5 stations, students will have a 2 minute break. After the 2 minute break, students will repeat each station again.

3. Conclusion:
After completing all stations, each student will be asked to name 5 health benefits, out loud to the teacher, that resulted or would result from performing physical exercise.

Assessments

Criteria:
Student will orally describe 5 health benefits of vigorous physical activity to the teacher. (PE.A.3.2.1)

Evidence:
After participating in physical activity, the student will describe out loud to the teacher 5 health benefits that result from regular participation in vigorous physical activity. Check off students' names as they correctly describe the 5 health benefits.
