Description

Family Cookbook is a published collection of recipes emphasizing number names and ingredients in a picture book format.

Standards

Florida Sunshine State Standards
LA.B.1.2.1
The student prepares for writing by recording thoughts, focusing on a central idea, grouping related ideas, and identifying the purpose for writing.

LA.B.1.2.2
The student drafts and revises writing in cursive that-focuses on the topic;-has a logical organizational pattern, including a beginning, middle, conclusion, and transitional devices;-has ample development of supporting ideas;-demonstrates a command of language including precision in word choice;-generally has correct subject/verb agreement;-generally has correct verb and noun forms;-with few exceptions, has sentences that are complete, except when fragments are usedpurposefully;-uses a variety of sentence structures; and-generally follows the conventions of punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

-Class Cookbook binder and plastic page protectors
-Computer stations have pre-loaded word processing software and scanner software with printer and scanner capabilities
-Printing paper and ink
-Student copies of Florida Writes Scoring Rubric and Family Cookbook Mathematical Assessment

Preparations

1. Gather materials
2. Pre-load software at computer stations

Procedures

1. Students bring in recipes of a favorite family dish.

2. Students use the recipe to create a page for a class cookbook. They are required to write the recipe in their own words with numerical word names in parenthesis, as well as a pictorial representation of the measured ingredients (as previewed on their copies of Family Cookbook Mathematical Assessment.

3. Students share the draft recipe with three peers, then with the teacher.

4. Students use word processing software to type their final recipes and use a publishing program to scan in their measurement drawings.

5. Students use The Florida Writes scoring rubric to evaluate their work.

6. Students conference individually with the teacher, sharing all of their copies and self-assessment.

7. Teacher assesses using Family Cookbook Assessment Guide.
