Preparations

1. Make sure your Geo George is in good working order, and if he is too dog-eared, make a fresh one.

2. Check for completeness and visual positioning of the song lyrics, word board, poems, etc. that students may need to see during this session.

3. Cut 8 -inch squares.

4. Gather markers and/or crayons.

5. Allow time for any student(s) who has forgotten his/her puppet to make another.

6. Use the Assessment Management Tool to record student formative assessment results. (See Extensions for link to Unit Plan)

Procedures

NOTE: This final lesson is for review and warm-up. The performance summative assessment is given this day. The following day the written summative assessment is given. Directions for administering these assessments are in the Attached Files of the Unit Plan.

1. As students arrive they put everything away and get out their geo puppet. Have ready 8 -inch squares of paper so if any puppet has been lost, forgotten, or worn out another can be quickly made.

2. With this warm-up, create a fun, risk-free environment in preparation for the performances.

3. Once all students have a puppet, Geo George makes his appearance. Encourage students and puppet friends to stand and join in to sing, read, recite, and review. Exactly what is done and in what order is entirely up to teacher and class. Do what is enjoyed!
Suggestions:
*Sing the songs together and in rounds.
*Recite the poems chorally and in parts.
*Read the Math Mouth word board.
*Tell what the words are by calling on individual geo puppets.
*Put the Doodle Clues on the overhead and let the puppets respond to the clues.
*Read any of the student poems displayed.
Have fun with the puppets. Set the tone of the classroom for one of joy and excitement to have the chance to perform for others.

4. Listen for correct and accurate responses, level of participation, and confidence in use of the puppet to formatively assess students. If a puppet makes an infraction in voice quality and/or content accuracy, with warmth and enthusiasm build the child’s confidence (as they may be nervous knowing they will have to perform alone today) by offering supportive comments and encouragement.

5. Once students are comfortable and ready to perform, end with Geo George handing out accolades of accomplishment. Ask them to be seated and put puppets away until it's time for the performance assessments to begin.

6. Teacher reminder: Throughout the duration of this unit, students have worked with a volunteer to complete the Copy Cat Shape Gallery activity. (Lesson 8, Copy Cat) Students were to turn in their assessment upon completion. Make sure all students have completed and turned in this summative assessment.

Assessments

Formative assessment of the targeted standards occurs as the students’ puppets interact with Geo George and friends. Carefully guided conversation between puppets offers positive and corrective feedback as exampled in the procedures. Students should have a good understanding of concepts and there should be little need for correction.
