Geo Jammin' - Day 7, Lesson 21: Dear George
Katie Koehnemann Bay District Schools
Description
In their journals, students write a letter to Geo George reflecting on the unit, activities, and things they learned. Included will be their favorite part of the unit, the hardest part for them, what they learned, and their thoughts on their performance.
Standards
Florida Sunshine State Standards LA.B.2.1.2.2.3 The student writes for familiar occasions, audiences and purposes (including but not limited to entertaining, informing, responding to literature).
MA.C.1.1.1.2.1 The student describes attributes of two-dimensional shapes using mathematical language (for example, curves, edges, vertices, angles).
MA.C.1.1.1.2.2 The student describes attributes of three-dimensional shapes using mathematical language (for example, curves, vertices, edges, faces, angles).
MA.C.1.1.1.2.3 The student sorts two- and three-dimensional figures according to their attributes.
MA.C.1.1.1.2.4 The student knows the names of two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures presented in various orientations in the environment.
Florida Process Standards Information Managers 01 Florida students locate, comprehend, interpret, evaluate, maintain, and apply information, concepts, and ideas found in literature, the arts, symbols, recordings, video and other graphic displays, and computer files in order to perform tasks and/or for enjoyment.
Effective Communicators 02 Florida students communicate in English and other languages using information, concepts, prose, symbols, reports, audio and video recordings, speeches, graphic displays, and computer-based programs.
Numeric Problem Solvers 03 Florida students use numeric operations and concepts to describe, analyze, communicate, synthesize numeric data, and to identify and solve problems.
Critical and Creative Thinkers 04 Florida students use creative thinking skills to generate new ideas, make the best decision, recognize and solve problems through reasoning, interpret symbolic data, and develop efficient techniques for lifelong learning.
Resource Managers 06 Florida students will appropriately allocate time, money, materials, and other resources.
Materials
-Student Math Moments journals or writing paper
-Transparency of Gee Whiz! task sheet (See Attached Files)
-Writing implements for each student
-Geo George puppet
-Overhead projector with projection surface
-An Assessment Management Tool for each student (See Extensions for link to Unit Plan)
Preparations
1. Decide if students will respond in math journals or writing paper and then have whichever it is they will need.
2. Make a transparency of the Gee Whiz! task sheet.
3. Have ready an overhead projector with projection surface.
4. Gather writing implements for all students.
5. Have on hand the Geo George puppet.
6. Attached Files contains:
Gee Whiz! task sheet
Procedures
NOTE: All summative assessments are completed and collected.
1. Geo George explains he must be going because another class somewhere else is waiting for him to arrive. Before he goes, he asks students to write him a letter.
2. Place on overhead the Gee Whiz! transparency. Geo George calls on students to read and share aloud what he would like them to write about. Students say good-byes and exit Geo George! Ask for questions and clarify.
3. Direct students to write in their Math Moments journal or hand out writing paper.
4. Allow students the amount of time they need to complete the writing assignment.
5. Collect. Read before putting in student folders.
Assessments
This is the final reflection for this unit of study. Formative assessment will occur as student letters are read and student understanding is discerned. You may find several students still unclear about a particular concept, many having the same “most difficult” part to the unit. If that is the case, it is suggested that you go back over the misunderstood concept with those students needing more instruction.

3. The Facts Please, Mr. Mumble is an interactive Student Web Lesson that addresses the standard MA.C.1.1.1.2.1; the student describes attributes of two-dimensional shapes using mathematical language (for example, curves, edges, vertices, angles). Students should visit the lesson regularly for optimal practice in describing two-dimensional attributes. The Facts Please, Mr. Mumble can be visited by clicking the link in the Web Links section of this lesson plan.
4. Geo Cleo and the Shape Caper is an interactive Student Web Lesson that addresses the standard MA.C.1.1.1.2.2; the student describes attributes of three-dimensional shapes using mathematical language (for example, curves, vertices, edges, faces, angles). Students should visit the lesson regularly for optimal practice in describing three-dimensional attributes. Geo Cleo and the Shape Caper can be visited by clicking the link in the Web Links section of this lesson plan.
