Designed to follow your instructions about converting number forms, this lesson is a real-world application of the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents.

#### Materials

-15 items of your choice (see Preparation)
In order to make the price tags, you need:
-Paper
-Scissors
-Marker

For the activity, students need:
-Student activity sheet
-Pencils
-Calculator (optional)

#### Preparations

2. Make 15 price tags with the following information:
\$100, 90% off
\$60, 80% off
\$64, 75% off
\$90, 60% off
\$130, 70% off
\$20, 1/2 off
\$95, 4/5 off
\$80, 3/4 off
\$60, 2/3 off
\$96, 7/8 off
\$200, .65 off
\$60, .75 off
\$10, .9 off
\$48, .5 off
\$150, .8 off

3. Complete the activity sheet yourself so you will have an answer key.

4. On the day of your activity, attach the price tags to 15 items around your room. Make sure the items are not too close so that the students will be spread out.

#### Procedures

1. Students are automatically going to be engaged after they walk in and see the price tags around the room, but in order to take it a step further, initiate a dialogue by asking -What are discounts?- Allow them to answer.

2. Ask them if they like to find discounts while they are shopping. Allow them to respond. Feel free to share your feelings as well!

3. Ask them how discounted prices are calculated. Make sure they understand this process.

4. Let them know that discounts can be expressed as fractions and decimals, as well as percents. Give examples of this and do the calcuations.

5. Put the students in pairs. Review your rules on how to be a cooperative worker. Let them know they will be assessed on how they interact with each other.

6. Point to the sign you made and say, "Welcome to Bargain Town, USA! This is a place where the discounts are extraordinary! Items are practically given away (instead of sold)! The owner of the store needs your help. As a matter of fact, here's a letter from him."

7. Distribute the activity sheet and ask them to begin reading it.

8. Make sure they understand their mission by reviewing the example item with them and modeling how to fill in the chart. Then, let them go for it!

9. As a closing activity, facilitate a discussion by asking them what they thought of the discounts. Ask them if it is wise for Mr. Tookind to offer such generous discounts.

10. Collect their sheets and assess them with the rubric.

#### Assessments

Each student will complete the attached student activity sheet. Activity sheets will be assessed using the attached rubric. The rubric will only assess the specified GLE's. Formatively assess students cooperative worker skills as determined in your classroom.

#### Extensions

Extension- Ask students to come up with more reasonable discounts.
