Changes in Matter

Carson Ealy, Jr.
Gadsden County Schools

Description

This lesson is developed to enhance student understanding of physical and chemical changes. It will also review knowledge of the states of matter.

Standards

Florida Sunshine State Standards
SC.A.1.3.5.8.1
The student knows how to use clues (for example, change in color or form) to determine whether a change is chemical or physical.

Florida Process Standards
Cooperative Workers
08 Florida students work cooperatively to successfully complete a project or activity.

Materials

- Black board and chalk
- Large candle/holder (one per group)
- Matches (pack for each group)
- Beaker (one per group)
- Water (100 ml of water per group)
-Bunsen burner with ringstand or hot plate (one per group)
-Goggles and thermal mitts (two sets for each group)
-Transparency of lab sheet
-Overhead projector

Preparations

1.Gather materials for demonstration and discussion.
2. Print the science lab sheet for each student (see attached file for science lab sheet).
3. Develop a checklist to measure mastery of Goal 3- Cooperative worker.

TEACHER ANSWERS For Lab Sheet
****************************************
1. Chemical- a new material is produced.
2. Chemical- solid to liquid
3. Chemical- gas produced
4. Chemical- color change of meat and texture
5. Physical- wax, shape,
6. Physical- glass broken in small pieces (size)
PART B
7. liquid to gas
8. solid to liquid
CONCLUSION: (any or all of these words)
9. heat, smoke, light, noise, smell, foam, sound, product, bubbles, liquid, solid, gas.
10. size, shape, boiling, freezing, breaking, melting

Procedures

Motivation: Have a student come and assist you in setting up two demonstrations.

1. Measure 100 ml of water in a beaker and place on heating source.(Hot plate or Bunsen burner and ringstand.) Heat water to boiling. Ask students, "Is this a chemical or physical change?" (Response: Chemical--clear any misconceptions) What state(s) of matter is present? (Response:
liquid and gas)

2. Light a candle, allowing it to burn for 2 minutes and ask students if it is a chemical or physical change.(Response: Physical) What state is present? (Response: solid, liquid, gas)

3. Go to the board and write the definition of physical and chemical. Physical is a change in size, shape, state of matter. Chemical change will not keep produce heat, smoke, bubbles, foam, smell,or make a sound). Have students write definitions in their science journals.

4. Have students placed in cooperative groups of 3-4 members.

5. Give copies of a prepared lab sheet (see teacher preparation). Explain the task written on the sheet. Allow time for groups to finish.

6. Collect all papers

7. Place on the overhead a transparency of the lab sheet for students for feedback and class discussion.

8. Assess papers.

Assessments

Science Lab Sheet responses : Students show an understanding of physical and chemical changes. Use the answers listed in the Preparation section to score sheets.

Extensions

To extend student learning have students create a collage of the physical and chemical changes.
