Description
Students use multimedia and technology to research and present a historical event or period in their hometown.

Florida Sunshine State Standards
LA.B.1.4.1
The student selects and uses appropriate pre-writing strategies, such as brainstorming, graphic organizers, and outlines.
LA.B.1.4.3
The student produces final documents that have been edited for: correct spelling; correct punctuation, including commas, colons, and common use of semicolons; correct capitalization; correct sentence formation; correct instances of possessives, subject/verb agreement, instances of noun/pronoun agreement, and the intentional use of fragments for effect; and correct formatting that appeals to readers, including appropriate use of a variety of graphics, tables, charts, and illustrations in both standard and innovative forms.
SS.A.1.4.1
The student understands how ideas and beliefs, decisions, and chance events have been used in the process of writing and interpreting history.

Materials
-Computer with Internet access/PowerPoint software
-Reference materials/maps or access to the media center
-PowerPoint example (see Attached File)
Preparations
1. Arrange computer and Internet access and test equipment.
2. Set up PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate the lesson.
Procedures
1. Start the lesson with a short discussion and presentation of history using PowerPoint. (See PowerPoint presentation in the attached file).
2. Present a little known fact about your town. (See PowerPoint example on Pensacola, Florida, in the attached file.) The presentation can be changed to fit the instructor's needs.
3. Use the PowerPoint presentation to outline the lesson guidelines.
-Students are to use the Internet and other reference materials and must keep notes and drafts on a disk for review by the instructor.
-Research must be done on a historical place, event, or time period in their town. Use the PowerPoint to show web sites and other sources of information.
-The student must explore and demonstrate the social, economic, cultural, or political impact of the event in their town and how it relates to history and the way it was written.
-The student must explain the event as it relates to present day.
-The student will collect the research using multimedia technology to intregrate pictures, text, or sound.
4. The students then present their research in a PowerPoint format to the class.
5. Review the rubric with the students so that they know the expectations.
Assessments
Assess students on their notes and drafts, providing feedback where needed. Also assess the PowerPoint presentation content using the rubric in the PowerPoint.
