Description

This is an interesting lesson centered around the book and tape Sheep in a Jeep. Students have the opportunity to practice rhyming words in a fun and entertaining format.

Materials

-Book and tape of Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston) 1986.
-Toy jeep
-Toy sheep or paper cutouts
-Rhyming Word Charts
-Note Cards
-Assessment worksheet (see attached file) for each child
-Cassette player and headphones

Preparations

1. Write letters on large note cards (j,e,e,p,w,st,ch,ea,l).
2. Make a chart called rhyming words. Write the words jeep, steep, lip, tip, weep, leap, wipe)
3. Make copies of assessment worksheet.
4. Obtain a toy jeep and toy sheep or paper cutout of a toy sheep and jeep.
5. Set up a listening center with a cassette player and headphones.
6. Gather all other materials.

Procedures

1. Introduce the book and tape Sheep in a Jeep. Point out author and illustrator. Review jobs of author and illustrator.

2. Have students predict what the story will be about based on the cover. Get responses and tell the students that this book is about sheep that go for a fun ride in a jeep.

3. Review vocabulary words from story. Ask students to raise their hands if they know what a jeep is. Get responses. Point to the model of the Barbie jeep. Ask students if they know what the word steer means. Get responses and tell students it means to hold the handlebars or wheel of a bike or car to make it move in the right direction. Ask students to tell you what they think cheap means. Get responses and tell students that means something that is not expensive and doesn't cost much money.

4. Instruct students to listen to the story to think of all the things that happen to the sheep as they ride in the jeep. Tell students to listen for all rhyming words they hear in the story. Give a quick review of rhyming words playing a stand up/sit down game. Students will stand if the two words you call out rhyme and they will sit if the two words you call out do not rhyme. Example : (sit, sat), (duck, luck) (hat, sat), (not, lot),(pin, pine).

5. Read the story or put on the tape as the pages of Sheep in a Jeepare turned.

6. After the story has been read, ask students the following questions and get responses. What did the sheep ride in? (jeep) What happens to the jeep after it was pushed over the hill? (The jeep went into the mud.) What happens when the driver sheep forgets to steer? (The jeep crashes and the sheep weep). At the end of the story the sheep sell the jeep. Ask: Why is the jeep cheap? (The jeep is wrecked).

7. Discuss rhyming words. Ask students to raise their hands if they remember some words in the story that rhyme with sheep. Put these on the board as students say them, but remember to erase them before you play the game described in the next procedure.

8. Tell students that they will play a game with rhyming words called Jump the Fence. Draw a fence on the board and write rhyming words from the story in a curved line over the fence. Tell students this game is called Jump the Fence. They will touch the toy sheep or paper cut out of a sheep on each word as they say the word as quickly as possible. Students will pretend they are sheep trying to jump the fence by being able to say each word that is written above the fence. Time volunteers with stop watches to see who can point to the words and say the words the quickest as they "jump" to the other side.

9. Using the rhyming words from the story that will be written over the fence in the Jump the Fence game, ask students which word means a type of car? (jeep). Which word means an animal? (sheep). Which word means high? (steep). Which word means to cry? (weep)

10. Using the toy sheep or paper sheep and the toy jeep play a positional word game. Students will hold the sheep and take turns placing the sheep over the jeep, beside the jeep, in the sheep, to the right of the jeep, to the left of the jeep, below the jeep. You will need to model this first. Make sure to circulate as each child places his sheep to make sure he is correct. Offer guidance as needed.

11. Practice decoding words the rhyming words using word tiles. Make large letter tiles with these letters, j, e, e, sh, ,p, j,w, ch,, l and ea. Give four students letter tiles j,e,e,p. Tell the students to put themselves in order to make the word jeep. Give another four students the letter tiles sh, e, e, p and they arrange themselves in order to make the word sheep. Give another four students the letters w, e,e,p and they will arrange themselves in order to spell weep. Give three students the letter tiles ch, ea, p. They will arrange themselves in order to spell the word cheap.

12. Hold up the chart labeled Rhyming Words. Have the following words cheap, jeep, steep, lip, tip, weep, leap, wipe. Tell students that we are going to cross out all the words that do not rhyme with jeep. Have student volunteers come to the front to cross out the words that do not rhyme.

13. Pass out the assessment page. Give directions. Tell students that for Part 1, they will circle all the words that rhyme with sheep. Part 2 directions will be given orally and students will complete the activity at the same time. Students will draw a sheep in the middle of the paper. Students draw grass under the sheep. Students draw a bird above the sheep. Students draw a tree to the left of the sheep. Students draw a butterfly to the right of the sheep.

14. Collect worksheets and provide feedback.

Assessments

In this formative assessment a worksheet is used (see attached file). Students who do not master 80% of the written assessment will be given additional practice and more opportunity to master the skills in the future. Students will have the opportunity to listen to the book Sheep in a Jeep with headphones in a center and to complete the worksheet again.

Extensions

Children can make patterned books based on the story. Patterned books are stories using repeating words and phrases.
