Life Box

Description
Students will decorate the outside of a small box, using words and pictures to depict how they see themselves, and they will decorate the inside to show how others see them. Students will present an oral presentation, explaining the box's decorations.
Standards
Florida Sunshine State Standards LA.C.2.3.2 The student uses movement, placement, juxtaposition, gestures, silent periods, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues to convey meaning to an audience.
LA.C.3.3.3 The student speaks for various occasions, audiences, and purposes, including conversations, discussions, projects, and informational, persuasive, or technical presentations.
Florida Process Standards Effective Communicators 02 Florida students communicate in English and other languages using information, concepts, prose, symbols, reports, audio and video recordings, speeches, graphic displays, and computer-based programs.
Materials
-Small box, such as a shoebox.
-Old magazines for pictures, words
-Photographs
-Awards, honors, and ribbons
-Paste
-Tape
-Stickers
-Scrapbook items
-Scissors
-Evaluation form for each student (See attached file)
Preparations
1. Depicting his or life, the teacher should make a model life box for students.
2. Teacher prepares a brief introductory presentation, explaining his or her own decorated box which will explain its accompanying pictures, words, etc. Teacher tells how the depictions on the outside of the box create images of how he or she sees herself or himself, and how the depictions on the inside of the box show how they think others see them.
3. Teacher collects enough scissors, paste, old magazines, construction paper, bits of wallpaper, etc., for student life boxes.
4. Teacher makes copies of evaluation form in attached file for each student.
Procedures
DAY ONE
1. Teacher gives the Life Box assignment. Students will decorate the outside of a small box, using words and pictures to depict how they see themselves, and they will decorate the inside to show how others see them. Students will present an oral presentation, explaining the box's decorations.
2. Teacher prepares a brief introductory presentation, explaining his or her own decorated box which will explain its accompanying pictures, words, etc.
3. Teacher tells how the depictions on the outside of the box creates images of how he or she sees herself or himself, and how the depictions on the inside of the box show how they think others see them.
4. Teacher tells the students to bring a small box, old magazines, and paste to class the next day. (Teacher may give this as an outside-of-class assignment.)
5. Teacher explains how the life box and oral presentation will be assessed:
(1) Identifies the occasion, audience, and purpose for speaking.
(2) Uses appropriate grammar, word choice, and pacing.
(3) Uses language which is clear, audible, and suitable.
(4) Delivers a speech which appropriately addresses the audience.
(5) Demonstrates non-verbal cues to convey meaning
(6) Self- expression through visual images placed on box. (See evaluation form in attached file.)
DAY TWO
6. Students decorate boxes.
DAY THREE
7. Students put finishing touches on life boxes.
8. Students prepare an oral presentation of life box.
DAY FOUR
9. Students present their oral presentations, sharing life boxes.
Assessments
Students will be assessed based on the following criteria.
1. Identifies the occasion, audience, and purpose for speaking.
2. Uses appropriate grammar, word choice, and pacing.
3. Uses language which is clear, audible, and suitable.
4. Delivers a speech which appropriately addresses the audience.
5. Demonstrates non-verbal cues to convey meaning
5. Self-expression through visual images placed on box.

Extensions
Teacher may assign this as an out-of-class assignment.
This assignment could be done as a poster.
