Name That Tune

Description

Students listen to music that is representative of different styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers and identify the music using as least two areas of classification.

Materials

-Compiled list and recordings of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century periods
-Various resource materials (e.g., Internet, CDs, videos, scores, books)

Preparations

Select excerpts from large works and play an excerpt from at least one well known work from each musical period in its entirety.

Procedures

Authentic Context:
As part of the end of the year assessment, have students participate in a variation of "Name That Tune." Play music that is representative of different styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers. As the selection is played, students identify the music using at least two areas of classification.

Procedure:
1. Throughout the year, introduce music representative of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century.
2. During the year, provide opportunities for students to research the style, culture, composers, and performers associated with the different periods.
3. As part of a final exam, have the students listen to musical excerpts and identify the excerpt in at least two ways (e.g., period, style, culture, composer, or performer).

Assessments

As part of the final exam, play a musical excerpt of various styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers. Allow time for the students to classify the excerpt in at least two (2) areas. Use the Name That Tune Assessment Rubric provided in Attached File to assess the student's responses. The rubric is based on 25 excerpts.
