Are You Sure You've Got the Right Answer?

Description

The student selects a problem to answer in the content area. Through the use of strategic questioning, planning, searching and information-compacting skills the student effectively uses the Internet to find the answer to his question.

The student locates, gathers, analyzes, and evaluates written information for a variety of purposes, including research projects, real-world tasks, and self-improvement.

Florida Process Standards

01 Florida students locate, comprehend, interpret, evaluate, maintain, and apply information, concepts, and ideas found in literature, the arts, symbols, recordings, video and other graphic displays, and computer files in order to perform tasks and/or for enjoyment.

Resource Managers
06 Florida students will appropriately allocate time, money, materials, and other resources.

Materials

- Paper and pencil for note taking
- Folder to keep notes
- Internet access

Preparations

Check with media specialist for times available at the library.

Procedures

1. Teacher shows example of finished research project to class (or provides sample for each student) and gives Research Cycle Rubric to each student so he knows how he is being graded.

2. The researching student defines a set of initial questions and:

3. Plans a visit to the Net in the library or in classroom.

4. Visits appropriate sites.

5. Collects promising materials.

6. Sign off Net.

7. Reviews and culls the first list of resources.

8. Plans another visit to gather information as needed.

9. The visits are repeated in cycles of planning, gathering, and sifting.

10. The student goes through the research cycle:
Questioning (before)
Planning (before)
Gathering
Sorting and sifting (after)
Synthesizing and putting together (after)
Evaluating (after)

Assessments

Student prepares a written research paper using the Research Cycle Rubric . See Attachment.
