Get Ready for FCAT with Music in Our Schools Month!

This lesson encourages the integration of writing skills with music during Music in Our Schools Month, which is in March. Afterwards, the smiles on the students' faces when they see their essays displayed around school is reward enough.


The student creates expository responses in which ideas and details follow an organizational pattern and are relevant to the purpose.

The student understands that music preferences reflect one's own personal experiences and respects differing values and tastes in music.


-Construction paper
-Copies of the decorative topic paper for the entire target grade level
-Ticky Tak or whatever you will use to post the essays around the school
-Letter to the parents


1. Draft a letter to the parents explaining the project, why the project is taking place (March Is Music in Our Schools Month), and due dates for the project.
2. Select three to four topics the students will choose to write about and print them out on decorative paper.
3. Make enough copies for the entire target grade level.
4. Make sure the principal approves the letter and the project.


1. In each target grade class, read the letter to the students and explain to them how it will work. After the explanation, students should be asked if there is anything further they need to know prior to beginning writing this project.

2. Announce the three to four different topics to write about. (For example: What the world would be like without music, or How learning to play the recorder helps me in other ways, or My favorite music artist is______.)

3. Ask the students which topic they would like to write about. When they raise their hand for the specific topic, give them the paper, which should have the topic printed on the top of the page. Music bordered paper may be used for a more interesting effect.

4. Tell the students that they must start off their essay with a complete sentence. For example, if they choose the topic, "My favorite music artist is", they should start off their essay with "My favorite music artist is [fill in the blank]."

5. Explain to students that the essay should be descriptive and should have at least four to five paragraphs.

6. Distribute the letters that are to go home to the parents. Also, if the school has a newsletter, make sure the letter to the parents is put in that.

7. The next two times the students come to class, give them time to complete their essays. Circulate the classroom giving help and feedback as needed (i.e. spelling, punctuation, etc.).

8. Remind students that if they are finished early, turn in the essay so that it can be reviewed and corrected it if it needs correcting.

9. The third time they come to class, have construction paper and glue ready for the students as they will be pasting their essays to construction paper.

10. Once all the essays are on construction paper and dried, laminate them.

11. The fourth time they come to class, have each of the students decorate the hallways with their essays (ticky tak usually works).

12. If the school has a morning show, reading the very best essays on the show really pumps up the students' morale.


In this formative assessment, students write an essay related to music.
Students will have accomplished the task if:
-the topic is selected from those offered in class.
-the student creates an expository essay in which ideas and details follow an organizational pattern and are relevant to the purpose.
-the essay relates to the writer's personal experience and/or preferences with music and how music impacts his/her life.

Students who do not accomplish the task will be offered another topic or given more instruction as needed.
