Metalling in Around the World

Description

Students learn the important leaders in different cultures by researching coinage. Through this process, they also recognize the cultural universality on coinage and currency.

Objectives

The student knows significant historical leaders who shaped the development of early cultures (e.g., military, political, and religious leaders in various civilizations).

Materials

- Textual References
-Envelope with pieces of paper with continents on them (Duplicate continents if you anticipate more groups than continents)
- Computers
- Internet Browsers
- Internet Search Log Sheet (see Associated File)
- Database Software
- Paper
- Writing Utensils.

Preparations

-Create a resource center containing encyclopedias and texts on different countries.
- Prepare enough copies of the Internet Search Log Sheet for student use (see Associated File)
- Prepare an envelope and pictures and names of the continents for lesson use.(see Materials and Procedures)

Standard 4: Students will identify and demonstrate an understanding of the cultures and human patterns of places and regions of the world. To achieve this standard, the learner will:

Know the physical and human characteristics of places.
Understand the characteristics, distribution, and migration of human populations on Earth's surface.


Lesson Procedures:
1.State: How will the future remember you? Many cultures remember their leaders by
putting their images in their coinage. Coins have been an interest of people and societies
since ancient times. It is common to find Roman coins in English excavation sites today.
Coins are used as money because they last a long time.

Money is an item or series of items that all people in a community recognize as having a
specific value, and that can be exchanged. For example, a baseball card is not money,
because not everyone values baseball cards to the same extent. Moreover, those people
who may value baseball cards, value the individual cards differently. One may not pay for
a haircut with ten baseball cards, but one can pay for one with ten dollars.

Today you will find out about coins in different countries around the world and will find
out about that country’s history at the same time.

2. Refresh students’ memories about the leaders imaged on American coinage. Prompt
students to tell you about the leaders and the leaders’ importance.

3. Inform students that other cultures remember their leaders the same way. Today they
will research coinage to learn more about other countries

4. Divide students into pairs. Randomly provide each pair with the name of a continent on
a piece of paper selected from an envelope. Students then must select a country from their
assigned continents to study.

5.Each pair must then decide who will be the secretary and who will be the computer
operator.

6.First team pair has 30 minutes at the computer. The pairs will spend their time:
Searching for sites
Maintaining a websearch log
Creating a database about the coins and the leaders they depict and composing historical information about the discovered leaders

7.Second team will be involved in the rotating activity

8. After 30 minutes, the two teams will switch activities

9.Students will work on their own compositions about their respective country’s culture
using the coinage figures as supporting characters

Rotating Activity (30 Minutes)

While one pair works at the computer, the other pair will work in the resource center
discovering information about the country using textual resource centers containing encyclopedias and other historical texts relating to world civilizations

Assessments

Students will create compositions about the respective country’s historical leader(s) depicted on the coinage.

This composition should be used as a formative assessment. The composition should discuss and demonstrate an understanding of the significance of the historical leader to the country/culture and explain why the leader would have been chosen to be honored on a coin.

Extensions

Culmulating Activity:

Students will create and perform a show demonstrating the diversity and universality of cultures around the world.

Extensions/Supporting Activities:

Have students research and write about the process of how the United States formed their coinage and currency at the country’s birth. What Political, Social, and
Communication problems occurred? Have the other students follow the same assignment for a country formed in the last decade and/or the development of the Euro. addressing the same areas. Compare and contrast the assignments.

Hold a dollar bill in front of the class and ask them what it is worth. Then have each student draw a picture of two individuals sitting together on a park bench; each individual being of obviously different cultural or economic background. Have them write a story telling how each person would spend this bill.

The following problem is provided to provide mathematical support:

You are planning a trip to one of the following countries: Brazil, Great Britain or Japan.
You want to know how much each will cost, but the only available information provided
to you is quoted in the currency of your intended destinations. Determine the cost of each
alternative in American Dollars, using the following exchange rates:

1 British Pound = 2 American Dollars
10,000 Dollars = One Japanese Yen
2,000 Brazilian Real = One American Dollar
