Let's Visit Letter Land

Students listen to a narrative story of how the letters learn what alphabetical order is when the letters can't figure out who should start the Letter Land Parade. The students will practice their new skills by alphabetizing letters first, then words.


The student alphabetizes words according to the initial letter.


-Large chart paper or chalk board (the chart paper is easy to relocate to a bulletin board or Language Arts center)
-Handwritten letters on small cards placed in a paper bag (large printed letters are best for whole class viewing)
-2 pieces of paper for practice
-A copy of the Letter Land story for teacher use from the attached file.
-Phone book, dictionary for examples of alphabetical order
-A chart of the alphabet preferable in its entirety in length, not in lots of rows
-Student scissors and pencils


1. Make a copy of the file of the Letter Land story
2. Make cards with the alphabet letters
3. Gather paper bag, and enough papers for each student to have 2 pieces of paper.
4. Make sure students have pencils and scissors.


1. Call students to come to the floor. Tell the students that today they will be needed to help solve a problem. Introduce the lesson by telling the students they will hear a story today about Letter Land. Explain that all the letters live in Letter Land on Letter Land Lane. You can draw a few littles houses on the board and put an Aa, Bb, Cc, etc. on the houses.

2. Refer to your copy of the attached file to begin the story.

3. At the conclusion of the story, tell the students that they will practice their new skills by playing a game.

4. The directions for the game are as follows: Select three children to pick a card out of the bag. The three children then line up in front of the class in ABC order. The rest of the class will check to see if they are in ABC order. If not, then some of the students may assist the three students in standing in the right order. At the conclusion, those three students may pick 3 more students to have the next turn.

5. After everyone has had to turn using the single letter alphabet cards, tell the students that there are many books that are in alphabetical order so that it is easier to find words that we are looking for. Show the students the phone book and dictionary. Show the students how you can use ABC order to locate words quickly and easily.

6. Write a few simple words on the board that begin with letters that are in close proximity in alphabetical order (cat, bird, dog).

7. Tell the students we can put words in alphabetical order also by using the same order as in the letter land parade. Explain that we will look at the first letter to decide which word should come first. Share this quick trick with them: they do not even have to be able to read the words to use ABC order, just look at the first letter.

8. Later, after the students are comfortable with this concept, you will need to introduce how to alphabetize words with the same first and second letters.

9. Pass out 2 pieces of paper and give directions: students fold their papers so that they have 8 boxes. Trace on the folds. Have them write a word in each box. It may be a color word, number word or spelling word for example. Or, you may choose the words you would like for the students to use. Have the students cut apart the boxes. Then, they can scramble up the words and pick 3 words. Then have them put these 3 words in ABC order. Have them write down the words that they picked in ABC order on the other piece of paper.

10. You can decide how many times you want them to practice, 4 times would be a good indication of understanding. Collect the paper that has the words written in ABC order to check for understanding and application of the new skill.


At the conclusion of the lesson, the students will use the skill of alphabetizing words by the first letter. This assessment will be in the form of a practice paper that the students will turn in for the teacher to check over at the conclusion of the lesson. Offer corrective feedback and many opportunities to practice this skill.
