Apple Eaters

This is an entertaining, cooperative learning lesson where students have the opportunity to taste a variety of apples and to graph which apple is the most favorite. Students practice their speaking skills by explaining the results of the group graph.


The student analyzes results of a survey as part of a class discussion.


-Bags of apples, Granny Smith, red delicious, Mcintosh, golden delicious)
-4 charts for the small group graph
-Sticky notes
-[Apples, Apples, Apples] written and illustrated by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Scholastic Inc. or another book about apples


1. Buy 4 bags of apples (Mcintosh, green, yellow, red).
2. Ask for a parent volunteer to come help cut tiny slices of apples for the children.
3. Write yellow golden delicious, green Granny Smith, red/green Mcintosh, red delicious on the board.
4. Prepare 4 charts with the words yellow, red, green, red/green written on them.


1. Read [Apples, Apples, Apples] written and illustrated by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace Scholastic, Inc. Discuss the importance of apples and different types of food we use that are made from apples. Talk briefly about how apples are a good nutritious health food.

2. Tell students that today they will taste four different varieties of apples and will make a graph to see which apple is the most popular.

3. Point to the four uncut apples in the front. Hold them up and name them (yellow golden delicious, green Granny Smith, red delicious, red/green Mcintosh)

4. Let the class predict which apple will be the most popular. Write these words on the board. (yellow, golden delicious, green Granny Smith, red delicious, red/green Mcintosh) Class will raise hands as an apple is called out. Put a tally mark beside each apple word. Count results of tally marks for each apple and discuss results. Remind the class to count by fives when the tally marks are grouped together.

5. Have four charts that are premade with the words green Granny Smith, red delicious, red/green Mcintosh and yellow golden delicious. Hold up the identical charts that will be used for a graphing experiment and have student volunteers try to read the apple words.

7. Tell the class that they are going to be divided into four equal groups. Each group will go to the back of the room and sit down and taste the different apples. Hold up each apple and say itís name and color. Demonstrate how they will taste each apple and after tasting each apple they will put a yellow square sticky note on the chart beside their favorite.

8. Divide the class into their four equal groups. Remind the class to work quietly, sample taste the apples and put the sticky tab on their favorite. Walk around the room and monitor the students.

9. Call group 1 to come to the front. Give each child in the group at least one question to answer about the results of the group graph. Ask which apple was the most popular? How many chose each apple? Which apple was the least popular? How many choose that apple?

10. After each group has completed sharing their graph, make a class graph. Write the words yellow golden delicious, red delicious, green Granny Smith, and red/green Mcintosh on the chalkboard. Have each student remove the sticky note on the group graph and place it beside the correct word on the board.

11. Students return to seat. Discuss results of class graph.

12. Tell the students to take out a piece of paper numbered 1-10.

13. Ask the following ten questions.
1) How many students in the class liked the red delicious apple best?
2) How many students in the class liked the yellow golden delicious apple best?
3) How many students in the class liked the green granny smith apple best?
4) How many students in the class liked the red/green mcintosh the best?
5) Which apple is the most popular?
6) Which apple is the least popular?
7) If you went to the store to buy apples and wanted to give everyone their favorite which apple would you need to buy more of?
8) Did our prediction we made with tally marks at the beginning of our lesson match out results?
9) Which apple did exactly ___people pick? (Teacher will pick a number)
10) Which apple did exactly ___people pick? (Teacher will pick another number).

14. Collect papers and discuss together as a class.


The assessment for this lesson is based on teacher observations during group time. Assess students' ability to interpet a graph accurately. When given 10 questions concerning the class group graph, students should get 8 out of ten correct. Any student who has not mastered 8 out of 10 will be given more practice to master these skills in the future.


Show apple trees in different times of the year. This lesson could tie into a unit on seasons.
