Description

Students create written proposals that will accompany an architectural bid for the construction of a recreation center.

Objectives

The student applies a variety of response strategies, including rereading, note taking, summarizing, outlining, writing a formal report, and relating what is read to his or her own experiences and feelings.

The student writes fluently for a variety of occasions, audiences, and purposes, making appropriate choices regarding style, tone, level of detail, and organization.

Procedures

Authentic Context:
A land developer is designing a single family home community in your local area. As a local architect, you will be competing for the contract to build a recreation center for this new community. Draft a written proposal of the recreation center you plan to design in order to persuade the land developer to hire your company.

Knowledge and Skills:
Students will be able to write fluently for a specific audience.

Procedure:
1. Facilitate a discussion of what would be needed for a recreation center devoted specifically to children between the ages of 5 and 10.
2. Review the assessment criteria prior to students doing the work.
3. In cooperative learning groups, students brainstorm a list of criteria for a quality recreation center. Students must chart and present 5-10 characteristics to the class.
4. Charts remain posted while the students draft their proposals.
5. Students draft written proposal individually with emphasis on communicating ideas and information clearly.
