Materials

-Access to video equipment

Preparations

1. Arrange computer and Internet access.
2. Contact a local hospital to serve as a Partner in Education.
3. Have video equipment available.

Procedures

Authentic Context:
You have been hired by a local hospital to explain career opportunities that exist within the hospital. You will create one of the following: an informational Powerpoint presentation, a puppet show, a one act play, or a video-taped television show focusing on one possible career that increases the knowledge of high school students about health-related professions.

Knowledge and Skills:
Students will be able to research a given topic.
Students will be able to effectively integrate multimedia and technology into classroom presentations on health-related careers.

Procedures:
1. Lead students to brainstorm a list of occupations in the health industry.
2. Compile a list of health-related occupations.
3. Students select a career to research by picking choices out of a hat.
4. Review rubric with students so that they know expectations.
5. Divide the class into self-selected groups by exhibit presentations. Students can go to either the Internet lab to surf for appropriate Websites containing information on health-related occupations or to the Media Center.
6. Students concentrate their research on the following elements: job title, illustration of career, nature of work, typical tasks, salary, job outlook, educational requirements, area schools that offer training in the profession, and advantages and disadvantages of the career.
7. Arrange field trips to a local hospital for that research group.
8. Students use the multimedia technology to integrate pictures, text, and sound into presentation of health career.
9. Students share their career presentations with the class.
