Name That Tune

Description

Students listen to music that is representative of different styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers and identify the music using as least two areas of classification.

Objectives

The student selects and uses appropriate listening strategies according to the intended purpose (such as solving problems, interpreting and evaluating the techniques and intent of a presentation, and taking action in career-related situations).

The student describes and classifies unfamiliar music according to style, period, composer, culture, or performer.

The student understands the influence of significant composers and performers on music styles, traditions, and performance practices.

Materials

-Compiled list and recordings of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century periods
-Various resource materials (e.g., Internet, CDs, videos, scores, books)

Preparations

Select excerpts from large works and play an excerpt from at least one well known work from each musical period in its entirety.

Procedures

Authentic Context:
As part of the end of the year assessment, you will be participating in a variation of 'Name That Tune'. Your teacher will play music that is representative of different styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers. As the selection is played, you must identify the music using at least two areas of classification.

Procedure:
1. Throughout the year, the teacher should introduce music representative of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century.
2. During the year, the students should have the opportunity to research the style, culture, composers, and performers associated with the different periods.
3. As part of a final exam, the students will listen to musical excerpts and identify the excerpt in at least two ways (e.g., period, style, culture, composer, or performer).

Assessments

As part of the final exam, play a musical excerpt of various styles, periods, cultures, composers, and performers. Allow time for the students to classify the excerpt in at least two (2) areas. Use the -Name That Tune- Assessment Rubric provided in Associated File to assess the student's responses. The rubric is based on 25 excerpts.
