## Face the Facts to Remember

#### Description

Students use manipulatives, drawings, and story problems to learn the two's multiplication tables. After learning how to find answers,they participate in a memory game to match facts and answers.

#### Objectives

The student demonstrates knowledge of multiplication (for the repeated addition and array models) using manipulatives, drawings, and story problems.

#### Materials

-One copy of each page in the attached file
-Seven sheets of cardstock cut in half
-One piece of poster board cut in half
-Black marker
-Book pockets (24 total)
-Cardstock for 24 cards (2X4) to use in memory game
-Snack cereal for counters
-Paper (8 1/2 x 11) for each student
-Pencils
-Chalkboard or dry erase board
-Treats (optional) for students who match facts with answers in game

#### Preparations

1. Make game (see attached file)
2. Write 2's multiplication facts on half sheets of cardstock. Give answers to the following facts: 2x0=0, 2x1=2, 2x2=4, 2x3=6, and 2x4=8. Do not give answers to the rest of the facts. (Example: 2x5=_ , 2x6=_ , 2x7=_, etc.)

#### Procedures

1. Introduce multiplication to the students. Explain that multiply is repeated addition and it means to add the same number to itself for a certain number of times. The sign for multiply is -x-.
2. Write -2+2+2+2 +2= 10- on the board. Show students that this means you have 5 groups and each group has 2 objects in it. (Draw 5 circles with two sticks in each circle.) Write -5x2=10- and -2x5=10.- Make the point that we can change the two numbers we are multiplying and still get the same answer just like in addition.
3. Tell students, -Today we are learning the two's multiplication facts.-
4. Pass out cardstock to each student. Tell students that since we are working with the 2's facts, they are to draw two circles on the paper.
This tells the number of groups we have.
5. Pass out cereal to students. Show them the fact 2x0=0. Explain that we have 2 groups with zero in them so the answer is 0. Hold up the fact card 2x1=2. Have them put one piece of cereal in each circle and write 2x1=2 on their cardstock under the circles.
6. Show students 2x2=4 and ask them what addition fact would give the same answer. (Answer is 2+2=4.) Have them show the picture and write the fact on their paper. Continue with 2x3 and 2x4, making sure students can name the corresponding addition fact. (Answers are 3+3=6 and 4+4=8.) By now students should recognize that you double the second number when you multiply by two.
7. Continue with students showing the math facts by placing cereal in the circles and writing the facts on their paper. The next fact is 2x5=_.
Call on students to tell the answers through 2x12=_. Remind them to think of the double addition facts as they answer the rest of the multiplication facts. Students may eat their cereal as the lesson continues.
8. Tell students you are going to call out a story problem and you want them to tell you which fact would solve the problem. (Call out problems from the attached file or use your own.) Call on students to name the facts that solve the problems.
9. To practice the 2's multiplication facts, play the memory game. (Refer to attached file for directions to play the game.)
10. After playing the game, have students turn their work paper over and write the 2's multiplication facts and answers correctly from memory.

#### Assessments

Students use manipulatives to determine the correct answers and give oral responses when called on to the 2's multiplication facts during the lesson. They participate in a class game to match facts and answers correctly.
Criteria: The teacher observes students work on their paper and oral answers to detemine if student demonstrates knowledge of how to multiply two numbers using a manipulative to solve the problem and provide the correct answer.

Students are assesssed by checking their papers where they wrote and correctly answered the 2's multiplication facts.

#### Extensions

This memory game can be used to review or extend the lesson to other skills such as addition facts, subtraction facts, antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, science, or social studies units.
The word or fact is written on one card and the match or answer on another.

Any edible manipulative may be used. Just remember to provide enough for each student to complete the lesson.

The website can be used for practice once students understand multiplication is repeated addition.
