Bounce & Sing Introduction

Description

This activity is performed at the beginning of the school to introduce students to classmates and the teacher.

Objectives

The student performs simple music phrases by ear.

The student improvises `musical answers` (e.g., rhythmic variations and melodic embellishments) in the same style to given rhythmic and melodic phrases.

Materials

-School-size regulation basketball
-White board and markers or chalkboard and chalk

Preparations

1. Obtain a basketball from the Physical Education coach.
2. Students should have prior experience singing and signing Kodaly solfege syllables. (see Weblink for chart)
3. Write four quarter notes, a bar line, three quarter notes and one quarter rest on the board.

Procedures

This lesson is a good way for teachers and students to introduce themselves as well as practice music skills based on the standards. The beginning of school or when a new class is formed would be the best time for this lesson.
1. Seat students in rows on the floor facing the board.

2. The teacher says, -Good (morning/afternoon) boys and girls.-

3. Students respond with various greetings.

4. Ask if there was anyone who felt uncomfortable responding to the greeting because he/she did not know the teacher's name?

5. Tell students we will be doing a melodic and rhythmic activity today in order to learn each otherís names.

6. The teacher taps out the rhythm on the board while singing: -My name is M(r.)(rs.)(iss)(s) ____________. What is your name?-

7. Now, ask students to sing and clap -My name is LA LA. What is your name?-
Remind students to give the rest signal (hands open, palms up) rather than clapping

8. Next, the teacher takes the ball that has been kept out of sight to this point and bounces the ball to the 8-beat rhythm while singing the introduction.

9. Ask students how the rest was observed. (The teacher caught and held the ball).

10. Using hand signals the teacher helps the children sing the melodic phrase -What is your name-. Students make up their own melody to the phrase -My name is ___________- but they must be able to repeat the same rhythm and melody sung by the teacher. Practice this several times encouraging students to use hand signs to direct their voices to the correct pitch.

11. In order to play the game, students will stand and move to form a large circle as the teacher counts to ten.

12. The teacher explains: he/she will sing and bounce the ball first. In order to observe the quarter rest, the player catches and holds the ball. The ball is put into play when the teacher passes it across the circle allowing the ball to bounce once in the middle. As each child finishes singing, bouncing, and passing the ball, the child sits down. If for some reason the ball goes to a child already seated, the child standing closest to the left of where the ball stops, takes the ball and continues in play. The game ends when the last child sings and passes the ball to the teacher --the only person still standing. (If a child is unwilling to play, ask the child to pass the ball to a student on either side of him/her. The child continues to stand and becomes one of the last players. A child who refuses to play even at the end of the game is asked to come back at the end of the day and if bouncing the ball is what inhibits the child, he/she may clap and sing for the teacher.) Students must sing the correct rhythm and notes on the question part: what is your name? but should improvise on the declarative statement: my name is ____________.

13. Play until everyone has had a turn.

14. Now ask students to decipher using solfege syllables what we all sang on the question if the starting tone was SOL.

15. Next, use hand signals and sing the question.

16. Ask a volunteer to give us solfege syllables to sing the question. Notate the syllables under the words. D=Do, R=Re, M=Mi, F=Fa, S=Sol, L=La, T=Ti

17. Ask at least two more students to offer their solfege notation.

18. Sing each one. Students vote on the melody they liked best taking into consideration ease of singing/signing, whether it led into the question well, staying within the key, etc.

19. Sing and sign the chosen melody (largest number of votes).

Assessments

A (/) is marked by the studentís name if the student is able to perform the simple music phrase 'what is your name?' by ear. A (\) to complete the X symbolizing totally meeting the standard, is marked by the studentís name if the student is able to improvise an appropriate musical answer within the 4-count rhythm set forth. Students who do not have a complete X by their name will need to work on either the repeating a phrase by ear (/), or improvising (\) before they will have met both standards.

Extensions

Teachers and students use solfege syllables and hand signals SOL-MI in singing the question. Once students have chosen a melodic pattern offered by a student, the pattern is noted on the board for the declarative statement and the class performs both phrases using solfege hand signs and proper voice placement. (See Procedure #18)
