Beacon Lesson Plan Library
Free Reading Chart
Cynthia Youngblood Santa Rosa District Schools
Description
Students will read library book daily for ten to fifteen minutes and then log in information on a Free Reading Chart, giving a brief summary of what they just read and then writing a brief reactionary response to the reading.
Objectives
The student uses background knowledge of the subject and text structure knowledge to make complex predictions of content, purpose, and organization of the reading selection.
The student determines the main idea or essential message in a text and identifies relevant details and facts and patterns of organization.
The student writes text, notes, outlines, comments, and observations that demonstrate comprehension of content and experiences from a variety of media.

In this connection, students will record questions, comments, ideas, and predictions- any responses that they had while reading the material.
5. After five entries, take up chart and evaluate SUMMARIES and CONNECTIONS to see if students were able to make predictions of content and authors purpose, to determine the main idea, and to communicate ideas effectively through writing which demonstrate comprehension of content.
Assessments
