Description

Who is the man on the penny? Are there people on other pieces of our money, too? What is a president? Students learn to identify and know the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter as they explore four of our presidents. They will listen to, view, and discuss George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, their presidencies and memorials including their images on various coins as they learn about money. Students also count to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s as they learn the value of various coins. This unit integrates social studies, math, and reading.

NOTE: This unit should be taught after the 100th day of school and is most appropriate during the celebration of Presidents' Day, the third Monday in February.

Lesson Plans

Counting to One Hundred
Counting to one hundred is a major achievement for kindergarteners. In this lesson, students refine their oral counting skills using a hundreds chart and pennies as manipluatives.

A Day for Our Presidents
No school on Monday! It is a national holiday. Do students understand the meaning and history of our national holidays? Students are invited to listen to, view, and discuss Presidents' Day, the national holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February.

A Penny for Abe
What do you know about Abraham Lincoln? Learn about his life, presidency, monument, and tribute to him through stories and poems. Students will also learn the attributes of a penny.

Washington and the Quarter
Why is George Washington called the Father of our Country? Learn about the life of this president, his monument, and tributes to him through stories and poems. Students also learn the attributes of a quarter.

Franklin Roosevelt and the Dime
How many terms can a president serve? Franklin Delano Roosevelt served four terms. Learn about his life, presidency, monument, and tributes to him through stories and poems. Students will also learn the attributes of a dime.

Count by Fives
Counting by fives can be a challenge. This lesson gives students an opportunity to explore counting by fives in a variety of activities including using a hundreds chart and manipulatives.

Jefferson on a Nickel
Who wrote our Declaration of Independence? Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, was the main writer. Learn about his life, presidency, monument, and tributes to him through stories and poems. Students will also learn the attributes of a nickel.

Penny, Nickel, Dime
What do you know about money? Using coins, students recognize and compare the value of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Counting skills are reviewed as students count pennies, nickels, and dimes.
