Sunshine State
Standards
The Sunshine State Standards are represented
in two ways:
1. In an alpha-numeric system, which will be referenced as the CODE in this
module,
2. In specific learning expectations
written
as statements.
Sunshine State
Standards --
The Code
The purpose of the code is to
provide a quick reference tool for educators. This code enables communication in symbols rather than complex language.
An example of a
Sunshine State Standard in code is LA.B.2.3.1.8.1.
This example contains all 7 parts of the code.
Each part is
described below.
1. Subject -- content
area
2. Strand --
broad areas of
knowledge
within the content area
3. Standard --
description of general expectations
regarding knowledge and
skill development within a strand
4. Learner Level
--
Level 1 (grades K-2)
Level 2 (grades 3-5)
Level 3 (grades 6-8)
Level 4 (grades 9-12)
5. Benchmark
-- description
of expectations about student knowledge and skills at the end of each
learner level
6. Grade
Level Expectation (commonly referred to as
GLE) --
explicitly
states what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level to
achieve the grade-cluster benchmark (GLEs are available grades K-8)
7. GLE
Number -- a number indicating which expectation is being
referenced in the sequence (some GLEs have only one number while others
have several).

Do You Know the Code?
This is an example of the
code, containing 7 parts,
through the GLE
Number. Educators use
this code for grades K-8.
Now look at an example of the
code, containing
5 parts, through the benchmark. Educators use this code for grades 9-12. At this time, Grade Level Expectations are not available for these grades.
