Excretory / Urinary system

Read this article about your kidneys.  Then, answer the questions on the right.

Do you know which body organs keep you alive?  Yes, you must have your heart, lungs, and brain, but do you know the other one?  You also must have working kidneys.  Kidneys are the main organs of the excretory system. Kidneys come in pairs, but you need only one to live.

The main job of the kidneys is to filter waste out of the blood.  All cells make waste as they use the food, water, and oxygen.  This waste passes back into our blood.  This blood then travels to the kidneys where the waste and extra water are filtered out.  Clean blood then leaves the kidneys, traveling back to the heart to be pumped through the body again.  About 50 gallons of blood are filtered through the kidneys each day.  Combining the waste from our cells (urea) with extra body water, our kidneys make urine.  Thanks to our kidneys, our blood stays clean and our bodies stay alive and healthy.
