My mom told me to go out and ride my bike, but I don't want to.

It is too hot outside!

It must be 200 degrees! I'd probably sweat to death!

Hot Stuff!

Well, maybe it's not 200 degrees outside, but how hot is it?

We can't go find a thermometer every time we want to know the temperature, but we can use what we know about temperature and just estimate. We can make an educated guess.

In America we usually use a Fahrenheit thermometer.

If we remember these three temperatures, we can estimate any other temperature.

Click each thermometer for help in making an educated guess.

It can't be 200° degrees outside.  The puddles and lakes would be close to boiling!  It's not boiling, but it is as warm outside as my body feels.

Use what you know to make an estimate of the temperature. I estimate it is about ° F .

Click the bikes for a hint.

Let's go snow skiing.

The winter is fun, but it is so cold! How cold do you think it is? Use what you know about temperatures to estimate the temperature on this winter day.

1. Freezing is 32° F.
2. The snow is frozen rain.
3. It's not too cold to be outside.
4. My coat and mittens keep me warm.

I estimate the temperature to be
° F.

I love to water ski too. How warm would it be outside to enjoy water skiing?

1. The air is about as warm as my body.
2. I don't need a wetsuit. I can just wear my swimsuit.

Click to estimate what you think the temperature would be.

130° F

90° F

60° F

I'm really thirsty. I would like some ice in my lemonade. What is the temperature of my lemonade? We know:

1. It is much colder than my body.
2. It is not frozen.
3. The ice cubes melt slowly.

Click to  estimate what you think the temperature would be.

90° F

40° F

20° F

I'm going to the high school football game tonight. What will the temperature be at the football game?

1. I need my sweatshirt, but not my jacket.
2. It is not cold enough to snow.

Click to estimate what you think the temperature would be.

80° F

50° F

30° F

When you estimate temperatures, always use these 3 temperatures to make an educated guess:

Boiling - 212° F

Human Body - 98° F

Freezing - 32° F

Now you know how to estimate temperatures using a Fahrenheit thermometer.  You will not have to carry this big thermometer with you where ever you go.
