Benjamin Bloom

Benjamin Bloom undertook the task of organizing educational goals and objectives according to their cognitive complexity. The results of this work is A Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, or Bloom’s Taxonomy. Bloom arranged cognitive processes into categories ranging from lower to higher order thinking skills. The lower and higher order thinking skills of Bloom’s Taxonomy are useful when developing assessment tasks.

The Beacon module, The Big Bad Wolf Meets Bloom's, introduces Bloom’s Taxonomy.  As we briefly review the levels of the taxonomy we can also examine at which level traditional and alternative assessments are generally addressed.

On the Bloom’s pyramid, click each level to review the 'can do' verbs and tasks indicative of that level.
