Sail on the Vocabulary Ship

Description

ESOL students make paper ships on which to identify and write root words, prefixes and suffixes.

Objectives

The student identifies word parts such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words.

Materials

-Construction paper
-Scissors
-Glue or paste

Preparations

1. Make a paper boat out of construction paper.
2. Gather materials for the making of paper boats.
3. Draw a boat model for students to use. (See Sample in Associated File)
4. Make students a list of words to identify. (See Sample in Associated File)
5. Make students a list of common prefixes and suffixes and their meanings.
6. Choose a recent reading selection or print out a text selection from the Internet for students to identify words with prefixes and/or suffixes.

Procedures

1. Construct a paper ship and show it to students. Discuss briefly what they know about ships. Ask them to name the parts of a ship and list their answers on the board. Point out that the hull of the ship is the base and all other parts (mast, anchor, etc.) are added to the base. Relate this to prefixes and suffixes. Tell students that today they are going sailing on a vocabulary ship.

2. Divide students into groups. Give students a list of words to identify and to share what each word means. Also, give students a list of prefixes and suffixes. Choose one prefix such as “re-” and show students how to add it to a base or root word, such as “cook” or “heat.” Explain how this makes a new word. Do the same with a suffix such as “-er.” Show students how to add it to “farm” or “work” to make a new word meaning one who....

3. Have students look at a recent reading selection or print out a text selection of your choice from the Internet. Each student makes a ship. From the reading selection, students choose words that have either a prefix, suffix, or both and list them on the hull of the ship. They should underline the root or base word. As students work, circulate and offer feedback and assistance as necessary.

4. On the board, draw two columns and label one as prefixes and one as suffixes. Ask each student to say a word from his/her ship. List the prefix or suffix in the correct column on the board. When all students have given a word, ask the class to think of another word for each prefix and suffix. Help them add to their words, orally explaining the prefix or suffix and the root or base.

Assessments

Check the ships to make sure students have listed only words with prefixes and suffixes. Choose 10 of the words from the students' ships and list them on the board. Tell students to copy them and circle the prefix or suffix in each word. If the word contains a prefix, students should label it with a P. If the word contains a suffix, students should label it with an S. Check to see that students can identify the prefix or suffix and label it accordingly. Offer feedback to students who are having difficulty.

Extensions

This lesson can be adapted to all levels by adding or by deleting the words on the word list.
