The Complexities of Reconstruction

Description

The students will be able to critically analyze the social, economic, and political impact of the Federalization of the South. The students will develop a PowerPoint presentation relative to the Post Civil War South.

Objectives

The student understands the military and economic events of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Materials

-Photograph of African-American male attempting to vote (This picture should be available in any American history textbook.)
-Internet site for photograph of an African-American voting(http://www.authentichistory.com/images/postcivilwar/general_pcw/187x_first_black_vote_painting.html)
-Textbook: [The Americans] copyright 1998 by Danzer, Klor De Alva, Wilson, Woloch, published by McDougal Littel (or comparable American history textbook)
-Computers with PowerPoint capabilities
-LCD projector
-Critical Thinking Activity Sheet which focuses on social, political, and economic aspects of Reconstruction (See Associated File)
-Library with Internet access
-Critical Thinking Reconstruction Rubric (See Associated File)

Preparations

1. You will need the textbook for the class.
2. You will need a photograph of an African-American male attempting to vote. See the following Weblink:(http://www.authentichistory.com/images/postcivilwar/

3. Develop a Critical Thinking Activity Sheet and Rubric. (See Associated File.)
4. Run copies for students.
5. Obtain a computer with PowerPoint software.
6. Obtain a LCD projector.

Procedures

Students should already have prior knowledge of PowerPoint. Students who do not have PowerPoint skills could display their information on a poster or project board.

1. The students begin this journey by reading the chapter on Reconstruction prior to our discussion in the classroom.

2. The students also should do additional research after school on the military and economic aspects of Reconstruction via the library, Internet, and any other sources deemed appropriate.

3. Show the students a picture of an African-American male attempting to vote after the passage of the 15th Amendment. (Ask the students what they see.)

4. Give students the Critical Thinking Activity Sheet examining the social, political, and economical impact on the Reconstructed South as a homework assignment). The Critical Thinking Activity Sheet will be used as part of the class discussion. (See Associated File.)

5. Tell students they will create a PowerPoint presentation to show their understanding of the military and economic aspects of Reconstruction.

6. The PowerPoint presentation will concentrate on the social, political, and economical impact of the Federalizing of the South.

7. Distribute the Rubric and discuss all criteria and levels of performance.

8. Serve as facilitator to give lead questions related to the three areas of discussions on the Critical Thinking Activity Sheet.

9. In the discussion the students should demonstrate their understanding of the importance of the Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th). Provide corrective feedback as necessary during the discussion.

10. Following the discussion, summarize key points of military and economic aspects of Reconstruction, noting key points on board.

11. Remind students of criteria on Rubric and set the date for their presentation (probably three to five days).

12. On the day of the presentations, use the Critical Thinking Rubric to assess students' understanding of the military and economic events of Reconstruction.

13. Readdress any concepts that students didn't understand.

Assessments

During class discussion of the Critical Thinking Activity Sheet, observe students' understanding of the key points included on the activity sheet. Following the discussion, student create a PowerPoint assessed by the Critical Thinking Reconstruction Rubric, which is used to assess students' understanding of the military and economic events of Reconstruction.
