Holey Story!! Student groups create story sheets with missing vocabulary words. Students locate context clues, justify their work, and evaluate their responses.
The student uses context and word structure clues to interpret words and ideas in text.
The student organizes and interprets information from a variety of sources for a school or real-world task.
-Computers with Internet access and printer
-“Holey” Story Sheet (To be completed electronically) (See Associated File)
-“Holey” Story Answer Sheet (See Associated File)
-“Holey” Story Checklist (See Associated File)
-“Holey” Story Comparison Sheet (See Associated File)
-Pencils or pens
1. Create student groups based on classroom/student needs.
2. Visit Websites listed in Weblinks. Confirm that sites are still active prior to student use.
3. In order to have students electronically complete documents, each page of the attached file needs to be created into individual documents.
4. Make copies of worksheets and handouts as needed. (See Associated File)
1. Using the Internet sites listed (See Weblinks), tell student groups to find a short story or a newspaper article. (Be sure to model steps 1-5 for students.)
2. Direct students to copy and paste the short story into the “Holey” Story Sheet (See Associated File) with a listing of the Website.
3. Instruct students to take out five words and replace them with XXXXXXXX.
4. Direct students to highlight clues for each “holey” to assist other students in Round Two.
5. Have students print out modified “Holey” Story Sheets.
6. Guide student groups to fill out the “Holey” Story Answer Sheets (See Associated File) with the explanation for why they selected the highlighted clues.
7. Instruct students to self-monitor their work with their “Holey” Story Checklist. (See Associated File)
1. Instruct students to switch “Holey” Story Sheets with other groups.
2. Advise groups to try to guess what the “holey” word would be based on the clue words. Use the model you created yesterday as an example.
3. Guide student groups to complete the “Holey” Story Comparison Sheets (See Associated File) and justify why they used the words they chose. (Show students how to do this using the model you created yesterday.)
4. Lead student groups to compare their “Holey” Story Comparison Sheets with the “Holey” Story Answer Sheet and determine their progress.
5. Advise students that for the answers that they missed, there is a justify section.
-Re-completed stories and comparison sheets
-Student-created worksheets with clues and Website listing
-Student-created answer sheets with clue explanation
-Students' completed checklists
-Majority of words are guessed correctly.
-Clues are appropriate and helpful.
-Explanations are clear and appropriate.
-Majority of checklist is completed.
This lesson can be modified for different occasions and/or subjects based on the Internet Websites that the teacher provides the students. In addition, the grouping of students is very benefical for ESE and ESOL students.
