Fraction Card Shark

The student will understand the relative size of fractions using symbolic and concrete representations.


The student understands concrete and symbolic representations of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents in real-world situations.


-Red Unifix Cubes (math manipulatives that link together to form objects or patterns)

-White Unifix Cubes

-Index Cards


-Prepare index cards by writing a fraction on one side of the cards (ex.3/4). On the other side (for self-checking) draw a model of how the fraction can be represented with the Unifix cubes.

-Prepare Unifix cubes to be distributed to each group.


1. Divide students into groups of two-four.

2. In a game format, combine fraction cards (See Teacher Preparation) in a single deck.

3. During his/her turn, a player draws one card from the top of the deck and constructs a model of the fraction with Unifix cubes. (Ex. If 3/4 is shown on the card, the student might use three red Unifix cubes and four white Unifix cubes.)

4. If the player models the fraction correctly, he gets to keep the card. If he is wrong and another player catches his mistake before the answer is checked (on the back of the card), the other player gets the card.

5. Play continues until all cards in the deck are used.

6. The player with the most cards in his possession wins the game.


This would be a good fractions concept activity for the Level 2 learner in the beginning stages.

Suggested assessments might include:

Teacher observation - Teacher should walk around and observe groups to determine whether they are

1) comprehending the concept of fractions,

2) effectively communicating and cooperating with others in their group.

If students are asked to express what they have learned in math journals, they should be scored according to a rubric such as the one used in the FCAT Math.
