Be a Scientist! I want to be a scientist when I grow up so I’m learning all I can now. One thing I know for sure, scientists get to use a lot of cool equipment.

I'm learning to use a thermometer like scientists do, but I can't go find a thermometer every time I want to measure a temperature. That is when I use what I know about temperature and estimate. I can make an educated guess until I have a thermometer with me.

Scientists usually use a Celsius thermometer. If we remember these three temperatures, we can estimate any other temperature.

Celsius and Centigrade are two names for the same thermometer.

Click each thermometer for help in making an educated guess.

 Boiling 100° C Human body 37° C Freezing 0° C

A meteorologist is a scientist that studies the weather. What would a meteorologist estimate the temperature of a sunny July day would be in Florida? I know that's about as warm as my body so it's around 37° degrees C. That's a good estimate. About 37° C

It has been cloudy but it just started snowing. How cold do you think it is? Use what you know about temperatures to estimate the temperature on this winter day. 1. Freezing is 0° C. 2. The snow is frozen rain. 3. It just got cold enough to snow. I estimate it will be about degrees 30 degrees C 0 degrees C -20 degrees C .

I love to swim. How warm would it be outside to enjoy swimming? 1. The air would be about as warm as my body. 2. I will just wear my swimsuit. Click to estimate what you think the temperature would be.                       Click the picture for a hint. 60° C 20° C

I'm really thirsty. I would like some hot chocolate. What is the temperature of my hot chocolate? We know: 1. It is warmer than my body. 2. It is not boiling. 3. I don't want to burn my mouth. Click to estimate what you think the temperature would be.   Click the picture for a hint. 60° C 20° C

It is almost bath time. What will the temperature of my bath water be? 1. I like my water warm. 2.I don't want to burn my body. Click to estimate what you think the temperature would be.   Click the picture for a hint. 80° C 30° C

When you estimate temperatures, always use these threetemperatures that help us guess: Boiling - 100° C Human Body - 37° C Freezing - 0° C

In this lesson, we used the word estimate.  What do you think estimate means?  Type a sentence that tells what estimate means.

Meteorologists and other scientists do such cool things. Click each picture for a scientific review. Someday I'll be the coolest scientist of all.
