Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849. 
The Fall of the House of Usher Poe was an American writer. He created poetry, short stories, and literary criticisms.
The Raven Poe was expelled from West Point Military Academy in New York after purposefully neglecting his duties.
Annabel Lee The poem "The Raven," published in 1845, made Poe famous. The poem entertains his favorite theme--the death of a beautiful woman.
El Dorado Death literature was common during Poe's day.  This was due to the high mortality rate of the time.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue Poe is considered father of the modern detective story because of his short story "Murders in the Rue Morgue" published in 1841.
The Cask of Amontillado Poe once said that the death of a beautiful woman is the most poetical topic in the world.  Many of his works have spotlighted this theme.
The Masque of the Red Death Poe's work is shadowed by the deaths of three women he loved:  his mother, a mother-figure, and his foster mother.  Later in his life, his wife--Virginia Clemm, died of tuberculosis after 5 years of suffering.

The Pit and the Pendulum

Right before his death, Poe was found outside a tavern in a semiconscious, delirious state.  When he died, his cause of death was listed as "congestion of the brain."

The Tell-Tale Heart

Recent research into Poe's mysterious death has proposed that he died of rabies.

"The Black Cat" is another short story by Poe.  This story tells how a man murders his wife, and a black cat reveals the location of the body.
